For most people this is not really an either-or: you start in Sembalun and you come out in Senaru. Sembalun sits at 1,156 m in open savannah, so there is less climbing to the crater rim and direct access to the summit. Senaru sits at 601 m in dense jungle and is the exit point on the three-day traverse. What you are actually choosing is how many days you have, and which of the two landscapes you want to walk through.
The numbers
The difference between the two trailheads is mostly altitude, and the altitude decides almost everything else.
The two trailheads
Same mountain, two entirely different landscapes. Here is what each side looks like on the ground.
Sembalun Lawang
Semi-arid savannah. Open skies, dramatic volcanic ridgelines, and a start that is already high, so there is less total elevation gain to the crater rim. This is the starting point for every summit-focused trek.
- Open savannah, views from the first hour
- Around 3.5 hours by car from the airport
- Pickup from anywhere on Lombok included
- 555 m higher than the Senaru gate
Senaru village
Dense jungle and traditional Sasak villages, more than 500 m lower down. Beautiful, and a great deal more elevation gain if you take it on in the wrong direction. On the traverse it is where you walk out, knees first. One trek does begin here: the 2-day Second Summit, out and back to the Senaru crater rim.
- Rainforest the whole way, shaded and humid
- Around 2.5 hours by car from the airport
- The exit on the three-day traverse
- The start of the 2-day Second Summit
Every package for the true summit begins in Sembalun. If you only have two days, Sembalun is both your start and your finish.
The classic traverse
The one route that uses both trailheads, and the reason most people book three days instead of two.
In one side, out the other
The most rewarding way to experience Rinjani is the full traverse: start in Sembalun, climb to the crater rim, push to the summit, descend to Segara Anak Lake, soak in the hot springs, and walk out through the jungle to Senaru. Each day brings a completely different landscape, and you never walk the same path twice.
Why everyone goes up Sembalun and down Senaru
The direction is not a preference. It is what the two starting altitudes decide for you.
What Sembalun gives you
- A higher start. At 1,156 m you begin 555 m above Senaru, and that is 555 m you never have to climb.
- Faster acclimatization. You spend the whole trek higher up, which is what your body needs before the summit push.
- Open terrain. Savannah and volcanic ridgelines instead of canopy, so you can see where you are going.
- Direct summit access. Every package for the true summit starts on this side.
What Senaru asks as an ascent
- A lower start. From 601 m there is significantly more elevation gain to the same crater rim.
- Dense jungle. Beautiful, humid and closed in. The mountain stays hidden above the canopy for hours.
- A longer way to the summit. Summit-focused itineraries do not begin here, which is why the traverse runs the way it does.
- Harder on tired legs. As a descent that same jungle is a gift. As an ascent it is a demanding day.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Sembalun and Senaru on Rinjani?
Sembalun (1,156 m) is the main trailhead for summit attempts: open savannah, higher starting altitude, faster acclimatization. Senaru (601 m) starts lower in dense jungle and is more commonly used as a descent route on the traverse. Most 3-day treks start from Sembalun and finish in Senaru.
Which trailhead is better for reaching the Rinjani summit?
Sembalun is the better starting point for the summit. The higher altitude start (1,156 m vs 601 m) means less total elevation gain on day one, and the open terrain allows a faster approach to the crater rim.
Is there a Rinjani trek that starts from Senaru?
Yes: the 2-day Second Summit trek starts and finishes at the Senaru gate, camping on the Senaru crater rim at 2,641 m with the caldera and Segara Anak Lake below. It does not go to the true summit at 3,726 m. Every trek that reaches the true summit starts from Sembalun.
What is the Sembalun to Senaru traverse?
The classic Rinjani traverse goes Sembalun ↑ → crater rim → summit → Segara Anak Lake → hot springs → Senaru ↓. This 3-day route takes in the summit, the lake and the hot springs, and is the most popular option.
