Wherever you start, the last stretch is the same, and you do not have to arrange it. Pickup is included in every trek package: from Lombok airport the drive to Sembalun is around 2.5 hours, from Bali 3 to 3.5 hours by air or 4 to 5 by fast boat, and from the Gili Islands 2.5 to 3. No taxis, no negotiation. Below: how each route works, what the day before your trek looks like, and the two things worth sorting before you leave the coast.
Travel times at a glance
Door to door, including the transfer on the Lombok side. These are the numbers to plan your flights and boats around.
The days around the trek
The trek itself starts at the Sembalun gate, but your day on Lombok starts earlier than that. This is how the arrival, the morning and the way back actually run.
Be on Lombok a day early
That day is part of the package. We pick you up wherever you are: Lombok airport, Bangsal Harbour, Senggigi, Mataram, Kuta or your hotel. The exact pickup time depends on where you are and when you arrive, so we confirm it with you directly. From there we drive to our guesthouse in Senaru, included in the price, where you check in, meet your guide, get the trek briefing and rest.
Breakfast, then the drive to the gate
Breakfast is around 6:30. We leave the guesthouse around 7:15 and drive to the Sembalun gate, roughly 45 to 60 minutes. After registration the trek begins around 8:00. Do not plan to land on Lombok the same morning: you need the day before for the pickup, the guesthouse night and the briefing, and travel delays happen.
Where trekkers go to recover
Drop-off is included to Mataram, Senggigi and Bangsal Harbour, where the boats to Bali and the Gilis leave. Somewhere else, like Kuta, the airport or Lembar, is possible for a small extra fee: mention it when you book. Book your first nights somewhere easy, because your legs will be sore and you will want a real shower, a pool and no stairs. Trekkers keep going back to Gili Air, where there are no cars and you snorkel straight off the beach, to Kuta in the south for surf, pool villas and good food, and to Senggigi, the closest beach strip to the mountain. The long version is in where to recover after Rinjani. Book through those links and this site earns a small commission from Booking.com, at no extra cost to you.
Getting onto Lombok
Two ways over, and both end with the same transfer. The boat is cheaper and slower. The flight is the fastest way over.
By boat
Fast boats run daily from Padang Bai in East Bali to Bangsal Harbour on Lombok, a crossing of 2 to 2.5 hours. From the Gili Islands the same harbour is 15 to 30 minutes away, depending on which island you leave from and the sea. At Bangsal the trek team collects you and drives to Sembalun in about 2 hours along the northern coast road.
- Eka Jaya, Wahana Gili Ocean and BlueWater Express are the reliable operators
- Around $20 to $35 one way from Bali
- From the Gilis: $3 to $5 on the public boat, $15 to $25 for a private charter
By air
Flights from Ngurah Rai in Bali to Lombok International Airport take about 45 minutes gate to gate, and Wings Air and TransNusa run several a day. From the airport the drive to Sembalun is roughly 2.5 hours and 70 km east, through rice terraces, tobacco fields and mountain switchbacks.
- Fares run from $35 to $80 one way
- The same drive if you fly in from Jakarta, Surabaya or Kuala Lumpur
- Airport pickup is included in every trek package
Already on Lombok? Pickup counts there too: about 2.5 hours from Senggigi, around 3 from Mataram, through the middle of the island and up into the Rinjani foothills. Deciding last minute from Bali or the Gilis? See how fast you can be on the mountain, including which groups leave this week.
What catches people out, and what is already arranged
The transfer is the easy part. The two things that go wrong are cash and cutting the arrival too fine.
What catches people out
- No ATMs on the mountain. Senaru and Sembalun have none. Withdraw at Lombok airport, in Mataram, Senggigi or Kuta, or at Bangsal if you come from the Gilis. Easiest of all: ask your driver to stop at an ATM on the way, it is a completely normal request and they do it all the time.
- The withdrawal cap. Most Indonesian ATMs cap a single withdrawal at around Rp 2.5 million, so for a group you may need two or three withdrawals, or two cards.
- Public transport. Reaching Sembalun on your own means several connections and a lot of waiting. A private transfer is far more practical, and it is already in the package.
- Landing on the trek morning. The day before is when the pickup, the guesthouse night and the briefing happen. Give yourself that buffer.
What is already arranged
- Pickup from anywhere on Lombok. Hotels, the airport, the fast boat terminal, the Gili ferry dock. Just tell the team where you are and when you arrive.
- The night before. The guesthouse in Senaru, your guide and the trek briefing, included in the price.
- Drop-off afterwards. Mataram, Senggigi and Bangsal Harbour are included, anywhere else for a small extra fee.
- The money. You reserve with $30 per person online and that comes off the trek price. The rest is cash in rupiah on Lombok, a fixed amount confirmed in your booking, so there is no exchange-rate guesswork on the day.
- Beach first, volcano second. Plenty of trekkers spend a few days on the Gilis before the mountain, and the 3-day summit and lake trek is the usual pick after the islands.
"Very well organized and taken care of from start to finish. Excellent team, service and value."
