Both routes start at Sembalun and both reach the summit at 3,726 m. The difference sits in the second night: the 3-day adds Segara Anak lake and the hot springs, and spreads the same climbing over more time, which makes it easier on the body despite being longer. The 2-day covers the crater rim and the summit and then turns around. Most trekkers choose 3 days.
The numbers side by side
Same mountain, same trailhead, same 2am alarm. Only three of these six numbers differ.
What each one covers
Both climb from Sembalun to the crater rim on day one. What happens after the summit is the whole decision.
2-day: rim and summit
Day 1 takes you from Sembalun to the crater rim camp at 2,641 m: long, but manageable. Day 2 is the 2am summit push and then the full descent back to Sembalun in one go.
- The summit and the sunrise above the clouds
- One night on the mountain
- No lake, no hot springs, no traverse
3-day: summit, lake and hot springs
Day 1 to the same crater rim camp. Day 2 is the summit push, then the descent to Segara Anak lake, the hot springs in the afternoon, and a night on the shore. Day 3 is the climb out to the Senaru rim and the long descent through the forest.
- Everything the 2-day has
- Segara Anak lake and the hot springs
- The full Sembalun to Senaru traverse
What the extra day buys you
The 2-day is not a lesser trek, it is a shorter one. This is what falls away, and what comes back for it.
What the 2-day skips
- Segara Anak lake. You look down on it from the rim, you never stand at the water.
- The hot springs. Natural sulfur pools a short walk along the lake shore, and the reason people book the longer route.
- The Senaru descent. The 2-day goes back the way it came, to Sembalun.
- Room to recover. Day 2 starts at 2am and ends with the whole descent: a 14+ hour day.
What the third day adds
- The same climb, spread out. The elevation gain is identical; you simply have longer to do it.
- An extra night at altitude. Harder on paper, easier on the body.
- A gentler pace. Which is why it suits anyone trekking at altitude for the first time.
- The route most people book. The 3-day Summit, Lake & Hot Springs trek is our most popular trek.
"We did it! A very nice trek 3 days / 2 nights with Zain. It was a wonderful experience, a bit hard the second day at 2 am to reach the summit but it was so beautiful when the sun came!"
Two days or three, the summit night is the same

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 2-day and 3-day Rinjani trek?
A 2-day Rinjani trek covers the crater rim and/or summit but does not visit Segara Anak Lake or the hot springs. A 3-day trek includes the summit, the crater lake, and the hot springs, and spreads the elevation gain over more time, making it physically more manageable.
Can you reach the Rinjani summit in 2 days?
Yes. The 2-day Rinjani Summit trek reaches the true summit at 3,726 m. It is a demanding itinerary, two long days with significant elevation gain, but very achievable for fit trekkers.
Is the 3-day Rinjani trek worth the extra day?
Yes, for most trekkers. The 3-day route adds Segara Anak Lake and the hot springs, two of the most spectacular parts of the Rinjani experience. It also spreads the physical effort more evenly. The majority of trekkers choose 3 days.
Which Rinjani trek is best for beginners?
The 3-day Summit, Lake & Hot Springs trek is recommended for most trekkers, including those without extensive hiking experience. The extra day allows a gentler pace. The 2-day summit trek is more intense and better suited to fit hikers.
Still not sure which one?
The 3-day is the most popular choice for good reason: the lake alone is worth the extra day. But it only works if you have the day to spare, so tell us your dates and we will say which one fits.
