Mount Rinjani's crater rim above the clouds at sunrise

The hardest climb on Lombok. And everyone who’s done it still says go.

A guided climb to Rinjani’s 3,726 m summit at sunrise, with Zainal and his team. You carry a daypack, they carry the rest.

5.0 5.0

Rinjani is 3,726 metres of volcanic rock rising straight from the sea, with the turquoise crater lake of Segara Anak resting in its heart. Climbing it is the hardest and most rewarding thing most people do on Lombok. We take you up and bring you back safely, with a local team that has done it more than five hundred times.

The climb, day by day

Three days from the tobacco fields of Sembalun to sunrise on the summit, then down into the caldera to the crater lake. Here is how it unfolds.

Day one

The ascent begins

The trail starts in Sembalun, a quiet village cradled by tobacco fields. Within hours, the forest swallows you. Roots underfoot, mist overhead, the sound of your own breathing. By late afternoon the tree line breaks and the grasslands open. Your first camp sits on the edge of everything.

Day two

Above the clouds

You wake at 2am. Headlamps cut single lines through darkness. The summit push is steep, relentless, and silent except for loose scree beneath your boots. Then the sun rises. The shadow of Rinjani stretches across Lombok and the sea. You stand at 3,726 metres. Below, the crater lake glows blue-green in the early light.

"It was a wonderful experience, a bit hard the second day at 2 am to reach the summit, but it was so beautiful when the sun came."

Day three

The descent and the lake

Down into the caldera. The trail switchbacks through volcanic scree, then flattens at the lake shore. Hot springs steam at the water's edge. You sit in warm sulfur water and look up at the rim you stood on hours ago. The silence is total. Rinjani gives back what it took.

Zainal

Lead guide & founder

Born in Sembalun, at the foot of Rinjani. Zainal has guided over 500 treks to the summit. He knows the mountain the way most people know their own street: every loose rock, every weather sign, every shortcut that saves you an hour when the clouds roll in.

He built this operation from nothing. A local team, honest pricing. When you book, you talk to Zainal. When you climb, Zainal climbs with you.

"Most people are a little nervous before the climb. You do not need to be an athlete. We walk at your pace, and we reach the top together."

Every trek is all-inclusive: pickup, the night before in Senaru, meals, gear, guides, porters and park fees. 70–80% of trekkers reach the summit and nobody gets left behind. Two routes run as shared groups you can join solo, no surcharge; the other three are private only.

"They emphasized 'step by step', saying we weren't competing and were taking it easy. The climb to the Rinjani summit was quite challenging, but my fellow trekkers and I made it."

Before you go

The questions we hear most, answered. Still stuck on something after reading these? Message Zainal on WhatsApp, he answers himself, usually within a few hours.

All prices are in US dollars, the standard for trekking on Lombok. The small online deposit is charged in USD and your bank converts it automatically at its own rate. A $60 deposit, which is two people at $30 each, is roughly €55. The rest is paid in cash on Lombok in rupiah, at a fixed amount agreed in USD, so nothing shifts with the exchange rate.

Right here, on the booking page: three short steps, and sending a request is free. Prefer to talk first? Message Zainal directly on WhatsApp. We are not on booking platforms. You always book direct with the guide.

Every guide and porter on the team is registered with Rinjani National Park and carries the park ID that gets checked at the trailhead. Each trek goes out with a first aid kit and emergency equipment, and groups stay small enough that nobody walks on their own. Share any health concerns before departure and the team adjusts pace and route accordingly.

Rinjani is a serious climb. Steep trails, loose volcanic scree and altitude make it challenging. A moderate to high fitness level is recommended. Regular hiking or gym training before you arrive helps, but is not strictly necessary. Determination matters more than fitness.

Yes. Many of our trekkers come solo. You can join a small group or book a private trek. Either way, Zainal or one of his senior guides is with you the entire time. Group sizes are kept small, six people at most.

The dry season runs from April to November, when conditions are safest and views are clearest. The wet season (December to March) brings heavier rain, slippery trails and reduced visibility, and the park usually closes January to March.

Yes, at our guesthouse in Senaru the evening before your trek, or at one of the small rental shops next to it. Boots, warm jackets, gloves, headlamps and trekking poles, roughly USD 1 to 5 per item per day. Your main luggage stays at the guesthouse while you are on the mountain and is waiting when you come back down.

Yes. Custom routes, adjusted durations and private treks are all possible. Send a message with your preferences and the team will build a plan that fits.
